This is either a book you’ll absolutely love or absolutely hate。 With that said, I’m convinced that the people who don’t like this book due to Pudge don’t truly understand what this book is about。 I found it absolutely amazing。 It truly shows how ignorant people can be to illnesses like depression and how self absorbed young people can be。 That’s not meant to insult young people。 It’s just in our nature at young ages to only think about ourselves。 You can truly see this in Pudge during the After This is either a book you’ll absolutely love or absolutely hate。 With that said, I’m convinced that the people who don’t like this book due to Pudge don’t truly understand what this book is about。 I found it absolutely amazing。 It truly shows how ignorant people can be to illnesses like depression and how self absorbed young people can be。 That’s not meant to insult young people。 It’s just in our nature at young ages to only think about ourselves。 You can truly see this in Pudge during the After portion of this book。 This is easily one of the best books I’ve read。 You most likely will not like Pudge, but that seems to be intended。 He’s an unreliable narrator。 。。。more

i think this book is a little boring at the start of the story but the end really shocked me, the things the protagonist said at the end are beautiful

this is gonna be long。i want to preface this by saying, when my sister was 14 she read this (because that was what’s up in 2014 angsty teen literature) so at the age of 10 I was told how this ended。 this led to me believe i could harmlessly break my don’t-watch-show-before-reading-the-book rule。 i was incorrect in my belief。 but! we’re here to talk about the Book, not the Show。 although i might refer back to it for comparison sake later on。 here we go。if you are unaware of the main plot point th this is gonna be long。i want to preface this by saying, when my sister was 14 she read this (because that was what’s up in 2014 angsty teen literature) so at the age of 10 I was told how this ended。 this led to me believe i could harmlessly break my don’t-watch-show-before-reading-the-book rule。 i was incorrect in my belief。 but! we’re here to talk about the Book, not the Show。 although i might refer back to it for comparison sake later on。 here we go。if you are unaware of the main plot point that divides before and after, i suggest you proceed with caution。 it will be mentioned frequently。this is not a safe space for Miles Halter apologists。 i’m pretty sure part of John Green’s goal in writing Miles was to really personify the concept of the male gaze-y "ah yes, i am in love with this girl i barely know and she is both the every question and every answer in life。 furthermore! her only purpose is not her existence independently, but how it circles back to mine。 because of course, since i am the Male Protagonist, everything is obviously about me。" So congratulations Mr。 Green, you have succeeded in creating a male protagonist so self centered he's on par with Holden Caulfield。 I'm just gonna put it out there right now: i too love Alaska Young- to no one's surprise since people have said i would for years now。 i don't love her in Miles' I love you Alaska bullshit way。 i love her because although we only see her through his skewed idealized perception, it is so easy to separate her from his ideas。 it's so evident throughout the book that yes, Alaska does like these boys, but not nearly in the way they believe her too。 because to miles Alaska is a hurricane who shifted the entire course of his existence, but he is just a good friend。 one she needed so desperately。 and one that, through Miles' self centeredness, he wasn't able to be for her。 all Alaska needed was for them to be there。 and through their crazed perception of her, they failed to provide her that, ultimately contributing to her downfall。that's the next point: her Downfall。 and this is part of my point on why i absolutely hate Miles Halter。 he took not only her life, but now her death and made it completely about himself。 the annotation shut up miles can be found so often in my copy because i simply could not stand it。 undeniably yes, the boys are partially compliant to her suicide- not only for Letting Her Go, but throughout the entire book due to their behaviour- they are not wholly to blame for it。 their fraction exists, but is so minuscule in the grand scheme of things。 Miles never grasps that, the others have a slightly better perception of that。 on a slightly different note i find their denial incredibly interesting。 Chip's grief is the best portrayed one, and i do believe him and Takumi to be great characters whom i dearly like, but all three boys show so so much denial。 because Miles was always so focused on himself, he never batted an eye at her self destructive behaviour。 none of them did。 they all brushed it off as "that's just Alaska" even after her death, even when contemplating why she would even commit suicide。 When really all along it is so clear that she was screaming for help that kept going unanswered。 i could keep going with this word vomit of emotions, but i'll stop here。 main point being: i love Alaska Young, and i'm so sorry。 haha。 guess The Colonel and I can agree on that statement。 i do want to mention the Show now! the screen adaptation was so wildly different from the book it shocked me。 the development between all of their relationships is deepened in the show, as well as so many details being flipped or added (for instance, the Old Man's impact on all their lives and his separate storyline, or the Eagle's relationship with the students)。 although i really loved the Show, and the Book, i view them as completely separate pieces of work。 the fundamental storyline might be the same, but in every other way they're completely different。 if you put them side to side, things start to get confusing。 Show Miles is much easier to like than Book Miles。 much of Show Takumi is a mix between Book Chip and Book Miles。 overall i don't think they can be put side to side without causing a whole big mix of emotions, so i choose to look at them separately。 two different Culver Creeks, with two different groups -one strong and one not- of friends, two different Alaska's, and two entirely different works。 one doesn't take away the fact the other is good, they just simply exist separately。 so truly i love both: one for how much hatred it invokes, and the other for the pain, melancholy, and grief it portrays。 the show missed the point of the book, the reverse being true as well。 i kind of love that。alright。 like i said i could keep going, but maybe i'll save some thoughts to myself。 。。。more

I am absolutely scared after reading this, although there was some dramatization in the development of Alaska I can assure you she is a lifelike character because she is so similar to me, not that I am super pretty or super smart no just that I don't let others in, ever。 the only thing that bothered me a little bit about the book was how predictable it was, there was nothing I did not know but again that was not the point of the book, the point was to go through the emotional roller coaster。 I am absolutely scared after reading this, although there was some dramatization in the development of Alaska I can assure you she is a lifelike character because she is so similar to me, not that I am super pretty or super smart no just that I don't let others in, ever。 the only thing that bothered me a little bit about the book was how predictable it was, there was nothing I did not know but again that was not the point of the book, the point was to go through the emotional roller coaster。 。。。more

I thought that the message in the book was good and had potential, however, for me personally the person narrating it (Pudge/Miles) wasn't the best character in the book and his personality was difficult at times。 I understand that all the characters are supposed to have flaws but his 'flaws' just turned into annoying personality traits。 I thought the other characters were good and deserved more time and development。 I think this book could of been a lot better if Pudge/Miles wasn't the person n I thought that the message in the book was good and had potential, however, for me personally the person narrating it (Pudge/Miles) wasn't the best character in the book and his personality was difficult at times。 I understand that all the characters are supposed to have flaws but his 'flaws' just turned into annoying personality traits。 I thought the other characters were good and deserved more time and development。 I think this book could of been a lot better if Pudge/Miles wasn't the person narrating or had a better, more likable personality。 All being said, I do think the book had an important messages and some parts relatable to most teenagers。 。。。more

I hope it’s not embarrassing that I’m reading John Green this late and genuinely enjoying it。 Also I get annoyed when people see I’m reading a John green book and are like “ wait he writes books? I thought he did crash course videos”

Good plot I just have a hatred for John Green’s writing。

It was surprisingly good。 I read the reviews for this book and i was scared that it was going to be very bad。 However after reading i realized i quite enjoyed it。 It was very questionable at some points and i hated the way the author wrote Alaska as well as the plot twist。 But the overall writing and message of the story was very thoughtful and creative。 tbh it was kinda bad, but it was the kinda bad that was so enticing you don’t want to put it down? idek。 i think i would give it 3。9 stars ⭐️ 😍

Listened to this one on audiobook and this is the method I would recommend for anyone wanting to read this book。 I can imagine that it’s quite a tedious book to read / over listening to。 Because I listened to it on audiobook I found myself listening to the whole thing in one day。 This isn’t typical YA fiction, it’s real, honest and doesn’t shy away from delicate subjects。 It can be cheesy at times, but it’s also worth considering that the main narrator is a 16 year old boy。 If you liked Perks of Listened to this one on audiobook and this is the method I would recommend for anyone wanting to read this book。 I can imagine that it’s quite a tedious book to read / over listening to。 Because I listened to it on audiobook I found myself listening to the whole thing in one day。 This isn’t typical YA fiction, it’s real, honest and doesn’t shy away from delicate subjects。 It can be cheesy at times, but it’s also worth considering that the main narrator is a 16 year old boy。 If you liked Perks of Being a Wallflower, you’ll enjoy this。Be your own judge on this one, but definitely listen to it on audiobook! 。。。more

Wow, this book is awful。 I read this book back in high school (as its target audience) and hated it。 The male lead and female love interest are insufferable and deeply unlikable。 There was no point in time where I was rooting for them to end up together。 The only likable character in this book is The Colonel because he's the only one with any common sense。 I guess it's commentary about how depression and trauma can shape us into unlikable people but it feels more like it's glamorizing and romant Wow, this book is awful。 I read this book back in high school (as its target audience) and hated it。 The male lead and female love interest are insufferable and deeply unlikable。 There was no point in time where I was rooting for them to end up together。 The only likable character in this book is The Colonel because he's the only one with any common sense。 I guess it's commentary about how depression and trauma can shape us into unlikable people but it feels more like it's glamorizing and romanticizing toxic behaviors and I just didn't care for it at all。 。。。more

I can't pinpoint exactly what it is about this book that made me dislike it but I did。 I found it pretty boring but I still read all the way to the end (I don't tend to DNF)。I didn't engage with the characters。 I didn't find any of them particularly relatable or likeable。 I felt like I was supposed to find Alaska super interesting or something but I just couldn't understand what Miles saw in her。 It seemed to me that all the characters did was sit around most of the time drinking and smoking and I can't pinpoint exactly what it is about this book that made me dislike it but I did。 I found it pretty boring but I still read all the way to the end (I don't tend to DNF)。I didn't engage with the characters。 I didn't find any of them particularly relatable or likeable。 I felt like I was supposed to find Alaska super interesting or something but I just couldn't understand what Miles saw in her。 It seemed to me that all the characters did was sit around most of the time drinking and smoking and pretending to have deep and meaningful conversations but it just made the whole novel seem quite clunky。 It felt like John Green had just taken some random teenagers and some sort of vaguely deep message and put them together but it didn't really work。I was disappointed that I didn't like this book。 I absolutely loved 'The Fault In Our Stars' and I realy wanted to like this book too but I just couldn't。 It seems the reviews on this book are split down the middle。 You either hate it or love it and sadly I joined the former。 。。。more
